Catch the musical and give the Chow Kit youngsters a chance to better themselves
Many think that teenagers in the Chow Kit area have no future, and they are likely to get into trouble themselves, like those who have been around the streets before them. However, this sentiment is not shared by those who live in the back lanes. With the media often reporting on all things bad on Chow Kit, the musical is a chance for the real residents of the area to show the public the truth behind this red light district.
The musical will be presented by KL Youth KRASH PAD (KLKP), a group of teenagers from the age of 13 to 19, guided by experienced talents in the musical theatre industry.
LORONG The Musical revolves around three friends who live in the notorious Chow Kit. They face obstacles while dealing with the different behaviours of the those living in a situation that is often thought of as inhabitable. There are many who believe that Chow Kit is despicable, without any sense of culture. These three friends are out to fend off perceptions and proof that there still beauty and hope in the streets of Chow Kit.
All proceeds from the ticket sales will go towards next year’s project. A part of their creative arts programme, the performers hope this musical will open the eyes and change the minds and reveal the truth about what is really happening in Chow Kit.
The group presented the original idea to Sejuta Impian, a reality show by Primeworks Studio and TV3 with the aim of making dreams of changing lives come true. The musical depicting the life and experiences of teenagers who live in the metropolitan street of Chow Kit – was chosen as one of the recipients of the RM1 Million Dana Belia 1Malaysia Fund. Thanks to the jury of the show Sejuta Impian, the group received funds of RM 20 000,to realise the musical theatre project L.O.R.O.N.G this year.
KLKP is a day-care center that enables the youth, in and around the vicinity of Chow Kit to gather and participate in various activities that are beneficial to them. KLKP is designed to assist adolescents in the era of globalisation by providing opportunities to develop their potential, while ensuring that they also received opportunity to enjoy life suitable with current developments. Most of KLKP’s audience are youths aged 13 to 21 years in the red light area of Chow Kit.
